the tracks were composed during the winter months in helsinki, finland in 2019-2021. railo (finnish for >a crack in the ice< or >crevasse<) can be seen as on ode to winter, the richness of the seasons and different weather conditions which have been an inspiration to karjalainens work. the arc of the album follows seasons from autumn to spring, starting from cold autumn winds (viima) and ending to the melting of the ice (sula). different winter phenomena are explored on the way, including >routa< (finnish for >ground frost<), >kuura< (rime) and >kelirikko< (a term known especially in the archipelago meaning a time at the end of winter when the frozen sea does not support transportation anymore but boat traffic is neither possible). yet, the album is being suffused with a sadness stemming from the threatening permanent changes in the diversity and balance of nature trough the climate change caused by us. hannu karjalainen is an internationally acclaimed electronic musician, video artist and photographer based in helsinki, finland. his albums have been released on international record labels since 2007, lately on the renowned german label karaoke kalk. domestically karjalainen is known as the recipient of young artist of the year (in 2009), one of finlands biggest art awards. his video art works and photographs have been exhibited in new york, berlin, zürich, paris and helsinki, among other places.

re-release! 2x12 inch + dl , gute luft is the result of months of work scoring the hit german tv film 24h berlin - the longest documentary film in history which featured 80 camera teams following the lives of berliners over a 24 hour period. obviously a huge challenge for fehlmann, beyond the scope of the project and hours of music involved in a 24 hour film, there was dealing with the decision making process that went with working with such a large production team. as he shared scoring duties with another musician (separately), inevitably a lot of his music ended up not making the final cut. gute luft is about re-tweaking and editing material from the countless hours of recording he had created. in a sense, gute luft is fehlmanns ideal soundtrack to the 24h berlin documentary.

ltd repress! dominik eulberg’s second ep on his label apus apus features the track “roter gitterling“ (eng. basket stinkhorn / red cage) on the a side and „tintenfischpilz“ (engl. octopus stinkhorn / devil s fingers) on the flip side. a. roter gitterling the fleshy red cage of this kind of mushroom reminds of a merging of an upside down shopping string bag and an alien. not allowing any objection, the track strides forward with determination towards a musical interpretation of this strange being. a fulminant kick drum counteracts in a very prosaic way the bitter-sweet pads. in a very narrative fashion the track gathers speed and flocks diverse soundscapes and disembogues in a break of harmonical expanse. conciliatory and in a hedonistic way the bass drum eventually stitches together what belongs to each other. b. tintenfischpilz this bizarre looking extraterrestrial mushroom evokes at first glance the image of a dead octopus or radioactive vegetable. as in a science fiction movie four to six tentacles sprout and raise out of a common stinkhorn and later spread into a star shape look. in an unparalleled manner this stunning progression is executed musically by eulberg with a high degree of elaboration. all done with elegant blend of continuous progression and permanent change the track wreathes itself towards heaven, whereas fragmented melody artifacts pour into the shape of a miraculous emergence.

on our tenth belters outing, we re borrowing the mighty fine bostro pesopeo from permanent vacation.. we ve been big admirers of his music for many years now and he contributed to our mix series back in the day. these particular tracks were actually ones he gave away on soundcloud and we immediately messaged him saying we d release them. took a while, but here there are. dj support from barnt, midland, erol alkan, etc.

phonica records welcomes spanish producer extraordinaire pional to it’s main label with the ‘xme / one night stand’ 12”. pional is miguel barros and the madrid based musician has been producing for over a decade. with a string of well received solo releases on hivern discs, permanent vacation, young turks and counter, remixing the likes of the xx, chairlift, the rapture, prins thomas and john talabot (who he also co-wrote the incredible ‘fin’ album ender ‘so will be now...’ with) as well as djing around the world, pional has been keeping very busy indeed. for his phonica release he has produced two versions of two very special tracks. on the a-side, ‘xme’ is a melancholic and uplifting electronic excursion with delicate flourishes of it’s synthesised melody becoming a real ear-worm throughout its six and a half minutes. the slower and more foreboding ‘quiet ceremony’ reinterpretation takes the same melody in a darker direction. on the other side, ‘one night stand’ is a bumping, stripped back and moody club track with ghostly vocals floating above metallic pads rising to a release of energy and emotion. the ‘slow drumapella’ lowers the tempo and alters the feel of the track, reducing its elements to a bare-bones drum track with the vocal, fx and pads eventually coming to the fore.

the new ep by german duo grandbrothers is a collection of remixes and re-interpretations of their standout track bloodflow. the remix by uk producer lone was introduced last autumn but theres brand new tracks to be found here by german techno electronic vanguard christian löffler, everyones favourite new idm producer brainwaltzera and new permanent vacation signing aera grandbrothers are the sum of unique parts: progressive swiss engineer/mechanic/sofware designer lukas vogel and german-turkish pianist erol sarp. their second album open twins sarps piano skills with vogel’s talent for both building the homemade intricate mechanics with which he exploits his partners instrument and also designing its software. sarp works at his ivory keyboard while, from behind his own computer keys, vogel live-samples his partners notes, triggering further effects with the aid of diy electronic apparatus that physically manipulate the pianos strings and body.

initially paying tribute to the analogue absurdity, sonic diversity and sheer imagination of the early 90s dance music landscape, future four returns after a hiatus of several years, pushing into new eras, machines and ideals with connection. initially a solo project of andy meecham, the brains behind emperor machine, chicken lips, and bizarre inc., connection is the first future four release to feature the contribution of erol alkan as a permanent member, and is a coupled with a remix from i:cube. a veritable powerhouse of synths, vintage drum machines and all man-ner of effects, connection unfolds with minimal tempo and maximum impact, as sequences of unexpected electronics gradually build from every direction, each landing with the razor sharp precision associated with their composers. cascading synths overflow like fizzy drinks, pro-pelling the track along an electronic patchwork of fm synthesis and psy-chedelia. on the remix, i:cube takes the unpredictable rhythm of connection and coaxes its versatile, multiple elements into a timeless slice of boogie house. nurturing the outsider casio feel of the track under a musical heat-lamp, the always forward-thinking frenchman emerges with a cut that could easily soundtrack both sun deck and space station.

the third of march’s trio of py 45s, is a revisit to the always enjoyable dark electro world of berlin’s mighty detox twins.
the new record offers up a pair of killer synthpop gems which, in the words of the bands’ mark vorderhaus “drift into the arena of the unwell with their latest outing “in the hospital garden”, and pose the curious questions: is it so unfortunate to surrender your mind to a permanent altered state? can losing oneself irreversibly to a manipulated insanity, actually prove to become a rare and wonderful freedom? attraction battles control as the transformation completes itself. the b-side, “transformation” depicts the liberated insanity without challenge, now thriving and pulsating beyond the point of any return.”

for the 23rd release on pinkman, rotterdam based mitchell goor delivers a 4 tracker of slow, raw and warped techno. the contrast between unpolished percussive instruments and ethereal melodies reoccurs throughout the release and gets polished and refined by haunting vocal samples and pungent acid bass lines. this gives the record an ability to take audiences on rollercoaster rides through tension and anger as well as hope and promise, powered by permanent, adrenaline stimulating, raw energy.
